Leadership Training, Community Service and Service Learning programs provide hands on training for learning to become effective educators and for understanding the potential and value of community service and service learning. Engaging in community service work is an increasingly common strategy for gaining a perspective on our own lifestyles while learning about global realities. Service work allows students to contribute to and learn more about a host community while working alongside locals.

Collaborating with friends to develop a community service or leadership project is both satisfying and exhilarating. Whether you spend your time working in Mexico teaching English to migrant farm workers, creating a summer camp for children in the Caribbean, or helping to maintain a section of the Appalachian Trail, you’ll be making a positive difference in the lives of others.

OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS WILL ALLOW YOU TO:

• Be engaged in a meaningful Community Service project that is congruent with the needs of the community.
• Work with community members and share opportunities for language and cultural exchange.
• Develop your teaching skills by working with students in a creative setting.
• Savor the reward of helping others as you enjoy the natural beauties of the places you visit. Depending on your chosen location, you may snorkel in the Caribbean waters, rock climb in the White Mountains, or discover waterfalls
• Prepare rustic meals in an outdoor kitchen as you watch the sunset with your new Windsor Mountain community service companions and become a pro at setting up camp.

A DEFINITION OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

"services which are identified by an institution of higher education, through formal or informal consultation with local nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations, as designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their needs, including:

  1. such fields as health care, child care, literacy training, education (including tutuorial services), welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement;

  2. ork in service opportunities or youth corps as defined in the National and Community Service Act of 1990;

  3. support services to students with disabilities; and

  4. activities in which a student serves as a mentor for such purposes as tutoring, supporting educational and recreational activities; and counseling, including career counseling."

Taken from the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Higher Education Amendments of 1992, and the Higher Education Technical Amendments of 1993

Why should High school students and Teenagers be doing community service projects?

Community Service is a way to grow and learn about different people in different places. Through community service activities we grow personally and have a chance to reflect how our community service helps others. To be honest, however, we must admit that high school community service programs often are more valuable to the American students who do them then they are to the communities in which the community service projects are done. Often the High School Students doing community service do not have the real skills to build the school houses they work on. The service project does, however, give high school students a platform on which to build awareness of the needs in the world. When high school students grow up, they have more opportunities, more resources, and more influence to bring to community service and hopefully their community service projects as youth will help them to understand the importance of community service later in life.

Community Service Projects for High School Students are important because we have an obligation as privileged people to do whatever we can to be helpful.

Through Community Service you learn a lot about yourself and others.

Community Service allows you to make a difference in the world.

Community Service is an obligation for many religions including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, and others.

Leaving places better than we found them is an important aspect of Community Service even if it just means picking up trash.

For all these reasons, High School Students should get involved in summer community service projects for teenagers.
